August 10  *  7 pm Heavy Metal in Baghdad Film Showing.
Veterans For Peace will show Heavy Metal in Baghdad (2007).  This documentary
follows the
Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day.  As Iraq disintegrated around them, Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

Veterans For Peace is a national organization with chapters around the country, including Tacoma. They draw on their personal experiences and perspective gained as veterans to raise public awareness of the true costs and consequences of militarism and war - and to seek, and encourage, the search for peaceful, effective alternatives to war.

August 11  *  7 pm.  Talk on Alternative Local Currency.

Sustainable Tacoma-Pierce presents on ongoing series of open-to-the-public presentations in conjunction with their Tacoma Permaculture Design Course.  This talk features Francis Ayley from Fourth Corner Exchange, an alternative local currency.  Are you short of cash?  Always struggling to cover the basic bills?  Never seem to reach a point where money is not a worry?  The present bank-issued money system is not working for the common good of the people or the environment.  It is driving a destructive economy and rewarding antisocial behavior. Come find out more about what is wrong with traditional money and discover what you can do to take back your economic power. Francis Ayley has spent the last 37 years exploring the alternatives to the destructive mainstream money system and will be sharing these alternatives in his presentation.  Cost is a sliding scale $10 - $5, although students in the Course pay no extra fee.
